Our Story
What started with the passion for helping families navigate the challenges of autism has grown into a foundation built on inclusion, education, and community. Building Hope for Autism is a Kansas-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 2019, by Paul Barnds and Dr. Shawn Sabin. Barnds and Sabin witnessed firsthand as they loved and cared for family members with autism. With the support of Executive Director Mauria Stonestreet and an active Board of Directors, the couple built the foundation fostering inclusion, connection, and support for individuals with autism and their families in the Kansas City area.

Our Mission

What We Do

The Sensory Project
Through The Sensory Project, we provide essential sensory tools—like weighted blankets, noise-canceling headphones, and crash pads—to help individuals with sensory needs find comfort, regulation, and success at home, just like in therapy or school.

Community Connection
We host sensory-friendly activities throughout the Kansas City area—from movie nights and museum visits to seasonal events—designed so families can enjoy experiences together in a supportive, judgment-free environment.

Annual Golf Classic

Our biggest fundraiser of
the year brings together community partners, families, and supporters for a day of golf, fun, and purpose. Now in its 5th year, this event helps sustain all the programs we offer year-round. For more information visit head here.
